THE TOP STORY

πŸš€ OpenAI smashes records with a massive funding round and a fast-growing subscriber base

The maker of ChatGPT is cementing its status as the undisputed leader in generative AI. The company just landed a monumental $40 billion funding round, led mainly by SoftBank, pushing its valuation to an impressive $300 billion. Meanwhile, its premium user base keeps growing, now reaching 20 million paying subscribers and generating annual revenue of roughly $5 billion.

Details:

  • An unprecedented raise: This historic round is the largest private investment ever made in tech. SoftBank is putting in the lion’s share with $30 billion, topped up by contributions from giants like Microsoft and Thrive Capital.

  • Lightning-fast adoption: In just one quarter, ChatGPT picked up 4.5 million new paying subscribers, pushing its monthly revenue to around $415 million.

  • Infrastructure ambitions: This war chest will mainly go toward beefing up technical capacity and developing next-generation AI models to keep up with the appetite of its 500 million weekly users.

Why I’m telling you about this ‡️

This double win shows just how deeply OpenAI is rooted in today’s tech landscape. With these considerable resources, the company can now speed up its research while strengthening its edge over international competitors. The steady rise in subscriptions also reflects how AI is gradually becoming part of our everyday work, whether for coding, analyzing medical data or optimizing financial strategies.

πŸŽ“ Claude heads to college

Anthropic is taking a giant leap into academia with the launch of Claude for Education, a version of its AI assistant designed specifically for higher education. Far from being just a research tool, this new offering aims to foster critical thinking and deep reasoning among students.

Details:

  • Learning Mode takes a Socratic approach, asking questions that push students to develop their own thinking rather than handing them ready-made answers

  • Prestigious institutions like Northeastern University, the LSE and Champlain College have already adopted the tool, giving their academic communities AI support for a range of teaching and administrative tasks

  • Two new programs are launching for students: Claude Campus Ambassadors, which promotes responsible AI use, and a program offering free API credits to student developers to bring their AI projects to life

Why I’m telling you about this ‡️

At a time when 86% of students already use AI every week, Claude for Education offers a different approach. By turning AI into a true learning partner that guides rather than simply answers, Anthropic is addressing a fundamental educational need. This shift could not only enrich the learning experience but also greatly simplify administrative work for institutions.

πŸ€– A historic race: robots compete in a half marathon in Beijing

A world first just took place this weekend on the outskirts of Beijing! 21 humanoid robots took part in the Yizhuang half marathon alongside thousands of human runners. This unprecedented showcase reflects China’s ambition to become the global leader in humanoid robotics by 2027.

  • The 21.1 km race put the endurance and autonomy of robots built by Chinese companies to the test in real-world conditions. The challenge? Keep a minimum pace of 6 km/h, within a time limit initially set at 3 hours 30 minutes, then extended to 4 hours 10 minutes given the difficulties encountered.

  • The results say a lot about where the technology stands today: of the 21 mechanical participants, only 4 crossed the finish line in time. The winner, a humanoid named Tiangong Ultra (1.75 m, 52 kg), finished in 2:40:42, needing three battery swaps along the way.

  • Power limitations remain a major hurdle, with most models lasting no more than two hours on a charge. Some robots fell or dropped out, like Shennong, which literally fell apart after hitting a barrier.

  • This showcase is reminiscent of the early DARPA autonomous vehicle competitions, which, despite mixed results, kicked off a wave of innovation in their field.

LEARN TO MASTER AI

🎨 Create eye-catching thumbnails with GPT-4o

The image generation tool built into ChatGPT now lets you design custom YouTube thumbnails in minutes. Whether you start from a simple text description, an existing image or even a quick sketch, you’ll get professional results without any particular design skills.

Tutorial steps:

  1. Upload your reference image to ChatGPT (yourself or the main subject), then write a detailed prompt describing exactly what you want in your thumbnail.

  2. To keep things visually consistent, also send it a thumbnail you like along with the image of your subject. Then ask the AI to keep the style while changing the elements of your choice.

  3. Refine the result with additional instructions or use the editing feature to target the areas that need changes.

  4. For maximum creative control, you can even upload a simple sketch showing your layout, along with the reference images to include.

Pro tip: Use a tool like Canva or Adobe’s Generative Fill feature to fit your thumbnail to the ideal YouTube dimensions (16:9 format).

WHAT THE RESEARCH SAYS

🫁 AI beats experts at diagnosing tuberculosis

A new study by Swiss researchers at Lausanne University Hospital shows that artificial intelligence can diagnose pulmonary tuberculosis with greater accuracy than human experts, even exceeding WHO standards for sputum-free tuberculosis tests.

Details:

  • Presented at ESCMID Global 2025, the study introduced ULTR-AI, an AI system trained to interpret lung ultrasound images from smartphone-connected devices.

  • The system uses a combination of three different models to merge image interpretation and pattern detection, maximizing diagnostic accuracy.

  • Tested on 504 patients (38% of whom had confirmed tuberculosis), it achieved 93% sensitivity and 81% specificity, outperforming human experts by 9%.

  • The AI can spot subtle patterns often missed by the human eye, including small pleural lesions that are invisible without assistance.

Why I’m telling you about this

As tuberculosis cases rise and diagnostics remain scarce or unaffordable in low-resource regions, this AI system could revolutionize triage by offering faster, cheaper and easily deployable testing. And since it runs in real time through a simple smartphone app, even minimally trained health workers can use it effectively in remote areas.
