THE TOP STORY

πŸ“ OpenAI officially launches Strawberry πŸ“

Image generated with Ideogram 2.0

After months of speculation, OpenAI has officially unveiled its latest artificial intelligence model, o1-preview, also known as Strawberry. The model stands out for its unique ability to reason before generating an answer, which lets it solve complex problems with greater accuracy.

Details:

  • Thinking before acting: Unlike its predecessors such as GPT-4o, which generate answers instantly, o1-preview takes time to think, making it better at tasks that require planning or iterative revisions.

  • Performance:

    • Codeforces: On this competitive programming platform, where participants solve algorithmic problems in timed contests, o1 ranked in the 89th percentile. That shows real skill at handling complex algorithms under time pressure.

    • United States Mathematics Olympiad (AIME): o1 also shone at this prestigious high school competition, ranking among the top 500 participants. That demonstrates advanced skills in solving high-level math problems.

    • GPQA benchmark: This test evaluates models on PhD-level physics, biology and chemistry. o1 beat human accuracy in these fields, confirming its ability to solve highly complex academic problems.

    • MMLU benchmark: The Massive Multitask Language Understanding (MMLU) benchmark measures multitask understanding across academic and professional subjects. o1 scored 78.2% and outperformed GPT-4 in 54 of the 57 categories, highlighting its exceptional multitask learning abilities.

  • Safety: Thanks to safety-focused training, OpenAI has optimized this model to apply its alignment guidelines more rigorously.

  • Limitations: For now, the model isn’t multimodal and is limited to text inputs, but future updates should add that capability.

  • Availability: ChatGPT Plus and Team users can access the o1-preview and o1-mini models right now by selecting them manually in ChatGPT. However, usage is capped at 30 messages per week for o1-preview and 50 messages for o1-mini. As for the API, access is reserved for Tier 5 users.

Why I’m telling you about it:

Strawberry is a major step forward, especially for professionals who work with complex scientific concepts or math problems. In those fields, where accuracy and deep thinking are essential, this model is a valuable tool. It could transform the way researchers and developers work by giving them a level of reasoning and analysis close to that of a PhD student. For simpler tasks, though, GPT-4o is still the better fit.

πŸ”§ An engineer builds an AI-designed walking coffee table

YouTube video by Giliam de Carpentier

The Carpentopod table being put to use!

Dutch engineer Giliam de Carpentier has built the Carpentopod, a cordless wooden coffee table that can walk, thanks to a leg mechanism optimized by evolutionary algorithms designed with artificial intelligence.

Details:

β€’ Leg design: The leg mechanism was developed with software that simulated thousands of generations of designs, optimizing criteria such as walking speed, ground clearance and efficiency.

β€’ Unique structure: The table has 12 legs (six at each end) made of precision-cut laminated bamboo, driven by two motors.

β€’ Custom controls: Carpentier wrote his own motor control software and uses a modified Nunchuck controller for remote control.

Why it matters:

This project shows how makers are combining AI, traditional craftsmanship and modern fabrication techniques to create one-of-a-kind projects that blur the lines between art, engineering and furniture design. AI optimization, even for simple mechanical systems, is only just getting started. You can find the full story of how he built it on his blog here.

LEARN TO MASTER AI

🎹 Create a Personalized Birthday Song with AI

Today I wanted to show you how to use a music generation tool with a fun tutorial that will impress your friends or family.

In the digital age, artificial intelligence is transforming music creation. With tools like Suno, you can now compose a personalized birthday song in a few simple steps:

1. Write the song lyrics

Start by writing the lyrics. You can do it yourself or use an AI (like ChatGPT) to help you.

The result (a nod to one of our readers, who will know who he is πŸ˜†):

Happy birthday, Happy birthday, Happy birthday, Geoffrey, Happy birthday…

My dear Geoffrey, you’re turning 39, A perfect age, you’re still looking so fine. Time flies by, but you stay on top, Come on, make a wish, and blow, don’t stop!

Happy birthday, Happy birthday, Happy birthday, Geoffrey, Happy birthday…

Today is your day, enjoy it to the max, 39 candles, blow them out with passion! May this year be sweet and full of cheer, With laughter, friends and a dreamer’s heart near.

Feel free to add personalized verses to make the song even more special.

2. Go to Suno

  • Sign up for free at suno.com. You get 10 music generations per day.

  • If you want more features or a commercial license, paid plans are available.

3. Create your music

  • Click Create in the navigation bar.

  • In the Lyrics section, paste your song lyrics.

  • In Style of Music, describe the musical style you want in English. For example:

  • Give your song a title (optional).

  • Click Create and let the AI generate your music.

4. Download and share

Once the music is generated, you can:

  • Listen to the different versions offered.

  • Download the MP3 file.

  • Get a karaoke video with the lyrics built in.

And here’s the result. Not bad, right?

WHAT THE RESEARCH SAYS

🧠 AI as a source of novel research ideas

Details:

  • An in-depth study of more than 100 natural language processing (NLP) researchers reveals that AI-generated ideas are judged more novel than those of human experts.

  • The evaluation was conducted blind, ensuring the impartiality of reviewers, who didn’t know which ideas came from the AI.

  • Although the AI’s proposals were seen as slightly less feasible, they still beat the humans’ on novelty.

  • The study also highlighted some challenges with AI idea generation, including trouble with self-evaluation and a lack of diversity in the output.

Why I’m telling you about it
This research sheds fascinating light on AI’s potential to drive innovation and accelerate scientific discovery. It opens the door to new thinking about human-machine collaboration in research, while underscoring the importance of continuing to refine these tools to make them more effective and reliable.
